Museum Virtual Tour Page #5
Apart from trucks, we also have this 155mm Howitzer, M114A1Cdn. It was built in Sorel, Quebec in 1956 and served in H battery, 3rd Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Regiment which was commanded by Captain Michael D. Calnan from 1961-1963. Then-Captain Calnan is now retired Colonel M.D. Calnan who is the President of the Museum so it's a happy coincidence that this artillery piece would return to be associated with a soldier who once served with it.
The 155mm howitzer could fire a 45-kilogram projectile up to a range of about 15 kilometers which is quite a distance! It was also capable of firing nuclear shells which made it an important element of the NATO arsenal at the height of the Cold War. Fortunately, this capability was never required in active service and this particular howitzer was acquired by the Museum from the Department of National Defence in 1997.
Let's move along. If you click on the arrow below, we can see a different type of cannon!
